2TB M.2 SSDs: More room for games, apps and everything else

A 2TB M.2 SSD gives you plenty of space without taking up another drive bay. It can hold Windows, everyday apps, a large game library and work files on one drive. That makes 2TB a useful choice if 1TB feels a little tight, but you don’t need 4TB. Larger capacity can also mean fewer trips to the uninstall button when a new game arrives.

NVMe speed depends on the slot in your system

If you’re comparing an M2. NVMe SSD 2TB model, check its PCIe generation as well as its headline speed. PCIe Gen 4 offers more bandwidth than Gen 3. A Gen 4 drive can also work in a compatible Gen 3 system, but it runs at Gen 3 speeds. Check your motherboard or laptop manual before buying so you know which performance level your system can use.

Check the size and cooling before fitting your drive

Before ordering a 2TB M.2 SSD, check the physical size and the space around the slot. M.2 2280 is common in laptops and desktop PCs, but other sizes exist. Cooling matters too. Many everyday drives can run without a separate heatsink, while faster models may benefit from one during heavy use. Some motherboards already include an M.2 heatsink, so check before paying for another.

Frequently Asked Questions

Check the manual or support page for your exact device. Look for the supported M.2 size, interface and PCIe generation. M.2 2280 is widely used in consumer laptops and desktops, but it isn’t the only size. If your device supports the format, browse our M.2 SSD range to compare suitable drives.
No. M.2 describes the shape and connector of a drive. NVMe is the protocol used to transfer data through PCIe. This is why two drives can look similar but use different storage technology. Check both details before you buy.
Yes, provided the system and drive are otherwise compatible. PCIe Gen 4 is backwards compatible with Gen 3, but the drive runs at the slower Gen 3 speed. That means you can use the drive, though you won’t get its full rated Gen 4 performance.
Not always on a PC. Everyday workloads may not need extra cooling, and many motherboards already have an M.2 heatsink. Faster drives can get hotter during long transfers or demanding tasks. Extra cooling can help reduce thermal throttling in those cases.
Yes, if it meets Sony’s requirements. A PS5 supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe storage from 250GB to 8TB. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s, and the drive needs effective heat dissipation. SATA-based M.2 drives aren’t supported.
Your device may suit another storage format or capacity better. A SATA drive can work well in some older systems, while an external model may suit backups and portable storage. Browse our wider SSD storage range to compare the available choices.
