I'm buying a 360 and HDTV at the same time so I thought I can pretty much just connect them both straight out of the box?

You may need to switch the primary screen to the TV monitor rather than the laptop screen. You can do this in the display settings.

yes, a screen doesn't need to have 1080 lines to support 1080i because it scans alternate lines. (interlaced)
