Creating a smart home has never been easier. Dim the lights, play music and turn up the heating… all without leaving the couch! With just your voice or a tap on your phone you can turn devices on when you need them, and off when you don’t. Check on your home when away on holiday, and so much more!

Where to start?

It all depends on what you want to do! You can easily start with some plug and play devices such as light bulbs and cameras, where you simply use your smart phone or tablet to control them or start with a smart hub and add devices to it. With a hub you can use your voice to control the different smart devices, play music, ask questions, or even do shopping!

What do you want to do?

Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa?

You can’t really go wrong with either, but there are some subtle differences that give Google the edge in some things, but Alexa the edge in others. The differences aren’t huge though, so it may come down to just which you personally think looks nicer and suits your home! In a nutshell, Google is able to answer more questions and give more information, but Alexa has better sound quality. Other than that they are pretty much head to head!

3. Do I need a smart hub to have a smart home?

You don't necessarily need a smart hub to create a smart home. Many products are stand-alone smart devices which are often referred to as plug and play devices. You simply set them up, link them to your home Wi-Fi and control them via your smart phone or tablet.

If you want to make your home a little smarter, you can use a smart hub to create a system where multiple devices can work together and the hub acts like the brain of the operation. You can also have more than one hub in your home.

If you want to control your smart devices through a smart hub it's best to make sure your chosen hub is compatible with any of your existing smart devices or if you purchase the hub first, double check that any smart devices you go on to purchase are compatible with your hub.
