Kingston external SSDs are made for storage you can take from desk to bag without much fuss. The XS1000 measures under 7cm long and supports read speeds of up to 1,050MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000MB/s.

That can help when you're copying large photo folders, videos or work files. It's also powered through USB, so you don't need a separate mains adaptor. Your actual transfer speed depends on the device, port, cable and files being moved.

1TB or 2TB? Match the capacity to your files

A Kingston 1TB external SSD model can suit everyday backups, documents, photos and a smaller game library. If your files are growing fast, the 2TB option gives you twice the listed capacity and more room for large videos or games. Think about how much storage you use now, then leave some spare room for future files. The usable capacity shown by your device will also be lower than the figure on the box because some space is used for formatting and other functions.

Your USB port has a say in the speed

The XS1000 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2, so a compatible 10Gbps connection is needed to make full use of its rated speed. Plug it into a slower USB port and the drive can still work, but transfer rates may drop.

Kingston supplies a USB Type-C to Type-A cable and a Type-A to Type-C adaptor, which gives you more ways to connect. For regular large file transfers, it’s worth checking the USB specification of your laptop or desktop before you buy.
