Check the laptop size before you choose a bag

Choosing an HP laptop bag starts with the fit. Looking for a 14-inch size? Measure the width, depth and thickness of your closed laptop, then check the bag’s internal compartment.

The same applies when choosing a 17 inch size, as larger laptops can also be thicker. Screen size is measured diagonally, so it doesn’t show the full body size. A close fit helps reduce movement without putting pressure on the zip.

Backpack, briefcase or sleeve? Match it to your day

Think about your journey as well as your laptop. A backpack uses both shoulders, which can feel more balanced when you carry a charger, notebook and other kit. A briefcase or top-load case gives you quick access at work or on the train. A sleeve keeps the bulk down and can sit inside another bag. If you carry a larger device each day, also check the bag’s weight, straps and handle design before you buy.

Look beyond padding: Pockets and materials matter

Good storage keeps hard plugs and cables away from the laptop itself. Look for a separate padded section, useful outer pockets and a zip opening that gives easy access. Selected models in this range use recycled PET, while others use polyester. If wet-weather protection matters, check whether the product is listed as water-resistant. Don’t assume the material alone makes a bag waterproof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start with your laptop’s screen size, then check its full dimensions. Measure the width, depth and thickness while the device is closed. Compare these figures with the bag’s internal laptop section. This is more reliable than using the screen size alone.
Not always. A 17.3-inch laptop can have a wide or thick body, especially if it’s a gaming or workstation model. Check the laptop’s actual measurements against the compartment before buying. You shouldn’t need to force the device past the zip or padding.
Usually, as long as the laptop is held securely. Too much spare space can let it move around while you walk or travel. Look for a padded compartment that holds the device in place rather than choosing extra space you don’t need.
Check the strength of the handles and straps, as well as the padding around the laptop area. A secure compartment helps limit movement. Extra pockets can also stop a charger or plug from pressing against the device.
Often, but your airline’s cabin bag rules still apply. Check the bag’s outer width, height and depth before you travel. A bag that fits your laptop may still be too large for an airline’s personal item allowance.
