Software licences that match how your team works

Microsoft server products can need more than one type of licence. Windows Server Standard and Datacenter use core-based licensing, while users or devices that access the server may also need Client Access Licences, known as CALs. A CAL doesn’t include the server software itself. It gives a user or device the right to access a licensed server. Checking both parts can help you avoid gaps in your setup.

Choose user or device access with less guesswork

Software licensing can feel technical, but the main choice is often simple. A User CAL covers one named user who accesses licensed servers from their devices. A Device CAL covers one device that can be shared by several users. This makes User CALs useful when staff work across several devices, while Device CALs may suit shared PCs. When comparing business software licences, count how people and devices actually access your servers before ordering.

Plan for upgrades with Software Assurance

Some licence products include Software Assurance, often shown as SA. This can add rights and benefits that vary by agreement and product. Microsoft lists benefits such as New Version Rights, Step-Up licences and selected server rights. Not every benefit applies to every agreement, so check what’s included with the exact product you’re buying rather than assuming all SA packages work the same way.
