Yes you can download messenger and it will be perfect for college work if that work is writing essays and checking the internet. You won't be able to use autocad on it for instance.

No to the extra drive, these are built to be small and portable. On this model you can upgrade the ram to 1GB.

If you use these net books as they were intended, then they run and boot as quickly as anything out there. If you're going to pile software on and try and use the net book beyond its means, which is basically anything beyond browsing, downloading or office tasks then it will struggle.
