1-Mar-2008 john: I need a computer for general work with programmes like MS Office; plus I want it to be as quick as possible on the internet. I have narrowed it down to 3 - this Dell Inspiron 6400, Acer 5315 and Acer 5310. All have pros and cons - Dell has 5 hours battery life, 1.Ghz speed and IGb Rm and is £20 cheaper; Acers have only 2 hours battery life but 5315 has 1.86Ghz and I Gb Ram, 5310 has 1.6Ghz but 2Gb Ram. Can you advise which of these Acer combinations will be he faster? Thanks

Easycom: It depends on the type of applications you use, but generally the difference between 1.8ghz and 1.6ghz is insignificant compared to the difference another GB of ram makes - especially with Vista.

I wish to use an external soundcard with the laptop, and run software that is designed for use with midi instruments, i will be using the software live in performances with my band, so obviously latency and the performance of the machine are huge issues, i will have no software other than the software i need for performing and i will not need to use the laptop for networking or internet use. Will this laptop be suitable? The Software i will be using is Ableton Live and Steinberg Cubase

Easycom: I think with any laptop you would be better off using an external sound card, rather than the onboard audio. As for the rest of the hardware, it's difficult to say, it would probably be fine, but you might be better off with a dual core processor if the sound processing is going to get intensive...
