This is a straightforward laptop with no annoying gimmicks, and it seems robustly built. I haven't really pushed it yet with any serious scientific computing, but it seems reasonably fast so far.
One slight downside with the pre-installed setup: I wanted to install Linux alongside Windows, but the hard drive came with four partitions already defined and in use, so it was necessary to delete one of them to get Linux onto the machine. This seems to be a known issue with HP machines, if you Google it. Not an insurmountable problem, but I had thought the days of "no more than four primary partitions" were behind us!
