Body Advertising - Laptops Direct

Laptops Direct, a Sunday Times fast Track 100 Winner, is the first UK Company to enter the growing market of Body Advertising.

The company is offering people the opportunity to promote the LaptopsDirect brand on their body. Successful candidates will sign up to a yearly contact after agreeing to have a tattoo of the LaptopsDirect logo. In return, they will paid up to £5000 depending which part of their body is tattooed.

Nick Glynne, Managing Director of Huddersfield based Laptops Direct, says "It is a competitive market out there and it's getting harder and more expensive to find creative ways of promoting our brand. We're constantly looking for new and inventive ways to get our name out there and I think Body Advertising offers us a cost effective and creative way to reach thousands of people."

The company currently spend most of its £1m advertising budget online."Online advertising is becoming more and more costly. However a person is seen by approximately 50 unique people each day and so not only will the cost of the tattoo be comparable to the cost of a Google Ad but it will be also be an interesting talking point." says Nick

The offer is not without conditions. LaptopsDirect stipulate that the advertiser must be a tattoo virgin. "It would cramp our brand if there were other competing tattoos" says Nick "The last thing we would want is one of our competitors to advertise on another part of the advertiser’s body."

The company also insists the advertiser needs to make a yearly trip to Laptops Direct Huddersfield HQ for a check up and "maintenance" of the tattoo. Nick says "We need to make sure that the advertiser is doing justice to our brand and hasn’t tried to scrub or remove our logo. And as body advertising is about to increase, we need to make sure there are no other tattoos And just in case the advertiser wants to remove their tattoo, we can provide that service for a small fee."

Countering accusations of exploitation, Nick Glynne says "I know some will think of this as exploitation but they are misguided. Lots of people have tattoos for fun and we are giving them an opportunity to get paid for doing the same thing! Besides our logo is a lot more tasteful than say the Leeds United logo or the name of an ex girlfriend. We are also doing a careful screening process to ensure vulnerable people such as drug addicts and the mentally ill are not branded."

LaptopsDirect are offering £5,000 for a tattoo on their forehead and £1,000 for a tattoo on arms, shoulders back or hands. After the annual check-up, advertisers will be given an additional 20% of the original fee per annum.
