SteveF: Vista is the operating system (software than runs the computer). Microsoft office is a software package that included word and excel and does need to be bought separately.

SteveF: You need to check how many licenses your edition of Microsoft office allows. If its one then you need to buy it again.

Office is a software program which runs in the operating system and yes it is compatible with both XP and Vista.
