Publisher has simple tools that make it easy to stand out and grab attention with photos

Swap pictures. Import all your pictures to a single canvas in Publisher, and swap them in and out of your design with a simple drag and drop. Experiment to find the right image, without wasting time.

Effects.Use professional-looking effects for text, shapes and pictures, including softer shadows, reflections, and OpenType features such as ligatures and stylistic alternates, that are familiar to use because they work like the effects in other Office applications that support them.

Online pictures.Use Publisher to search your online albums on Facebook, Flickr and other services and add pictures directly to the document, without having to save them first to your desktop, laptop, or slate.* *Internet connection required.

Picture background. Use your photos as high resolution page backgrounds, and make your publications look professional and polished.

Mail merge. Include photos and links in the familiar mail merge tools, and boost the personalization of your newsletters, cards, and emails.

Mailings tab. All your personalization needs in one place in the ribbon.

Simplified sharing. Your documents are saved to the cloud by default.

What's new in Publisher 2013

Microsoft Publisher 2013 adds new capabilities geared to help you add, change, and format pictures and text with new and improved effects, like glow and bevel, so that your publications have a creative snap without adding a lot of work to your plate.

Adding and changing pictures

Sometimes you want to try a bunch of pictures in different spots in your publication. Publisher 2013 simplifies the process for adding, changing, and swapping pictures.

Adding pictures

Publisher 2013 combines searching for pictures on your computer, from Office.com’s clip art gallery, and the web in one dialog.

When you choose several pictures at once Publisher puts them in a column in the scratch area, instead of one on top of the other on your page. From the scratch area you can drag a picture onto your publication’s page and drag it back off again or swap for another picture if you don’t like the way it looks.

Swapping pictures

To swap two pictures, whether they are both on the page or one is in the scratch area, select one picture and drag it by the mountain and sun icon to the other picture until a pink highlight appears around the picture and release the mouse button.

Creating picture backgrounds

You can take your pictures and use them as the background for your publication’s pages. Right-click on the picture, choose Apply to Background and then either Fill to expand the picture to take up the entire background, or Tile to fill your background with tiles of your picture.

Picture effects

There are many new picture effects available. You can apply shadows, reflections, glow, soft edges, bevels, and 3-D rotations to your pictures. Select the picture and click Picture Effects, on the Picture Tools – Format tab.

Text effects

You can also add many new effects to the text in your publications, new shadows, reflections glows, and bevels. Select the text and click Text Effects on the Text Box Tools – Format tab.

Photo center printing

Here are many options for online photo center printing, such as Costco or Walgreen's, and you can now save your publications for photo printing. When you save for photo printing each page of your publication is saved as a JPEG picture that you can upload to a photo center printing web site for printing.
