7-Feb-2008 Lorna Donnelly: do you get wireless internet connection with the Asus EeePC2GS, or do you need a wireless router?

Easycom: A wireless router would be required to achieve a wireless internet connection.

21-Feb-2008 Andrew Baird: hi. I REALLY want one of these but I was told taht I'd need to download drivers for any wireless router I got. I've been told it's hard to do and installing themm may be beyond a novice. Can you recommend a wireless router taht'll work "out of the box" with this. If not, can you give me any advice.

Easycom: You don't need to 'install' your wireless router on this - The laptop ships with all the drivers it needs to connect to wireless networks.

21-Feb-2008 GordonR: Does it have a CD-ROM tray and drive? I already have MS Office 2007 on disc, so will I be able to install it on this machine? And will it work with Linux?

Easycom: No it does not have CR ROM. You donot need to transfer MS Office Linux has its own Office.

24-Feb-2008 hazel: dose it have webcam and is it vista or xp

Easycom: Yes it does have a web cam and operating system provided is Linux

1-Mar-2008 GHY: Does this product have a CD/DVD drive ? I would buy this product if the children could watch DVDs on it.

Easycom: Unfortunately due to the small form-factor of these machines, a CD/DVD drive is not available.

3-Mar-2008 david: Hi, I am interested in this machine as a light and cheap machine for traveling so that I can browse and use email. I don't need it for anything else. I want internet connection on the move. Some mobile phone companies have USB connectors that allow laptop wireless connection. Is the ASUS OK for this? Also, will the ASUS scan for hotspots? What office suite does it comes with? If I email a doc as an attachment, can Windows read it? Can Mac OS read it? For what I have described I want it for, I cannot immediately think why I might need 4GB. What programs are available (I am not interested in Windows) that one might consider must-haves? thanks

Easycom: They come with all the basic open source software that you would need, you should be able to read all documents in Windows as well. The laptop has a built in 802.11b/g wireless card which would be able to scan for hotspots, or you could use a USB connection for any other type of network, such as a bluetooth stick.

6-Mar-2008 wilsonjohnhaire: can it be connected to portable broadband by a dongle with a usb cable like Vodafone and 3 is advertising? And can I continue to use my gmail address

Easycom: Unfortunately the 3G dongles from Vodafone do not support Linux, which is the operating system of the EEE PC. It is able to connect to wireless and wired networks, however - and will handle your gmail needs.

7-Mar-2008 julian: Hi im intrested in this computer, can you please advise does it come with msn messenger, or can it downloaded onto the machine? Thanks

Easycom: Yes, it can be downloaded onto the machine.

8-Mar-2008 Tim: How much space is left on the flash drive of the 2 GB version of the Eee after installation of OS and software? My needs are specific and quite limited as I just need to log data on a series (maybe 4 or 5) of spreadsheets. If this machine is adequate there would be no point in paying extra for the 4 GB version. Thanks.

Easycom: The operating system and installed software take about 1.6GB, leaving 400MB left. I'm not sure how much space it's possible to free up by removing any pre-installed software that you dont need...

9-Mar-2008 MaTtY-b0y: is 4gb hard drive good if i'm looking this to play games on?

Easycom: Small games yes, it wouldnt run high spec games.

13-Mar-2008 JayC: Hi there. Really interested in this item as my requirements are simply to surf the net and check emails in a more convenient location. I currently have Sky Broadband with a wireless router which I assume that this can easily be used on? I'm not that knowledgable on laptops so how to you get online when out and about? Cheers ...

Easycom: This will connect fine to your existing wireless router. For wireless networks when you're away from home, look at a subscription to Cloud/BT Openzone/etc - These are subscription wireless hotspots that have coverage in town centres and some public places. Some restaurants/cafes/pubs etc. offer their own free wireless networks for use by the public - which is a growing trend to attract customers.

14-Mar-2008 guru: Does it have a WEBCAM as i have read that 2 GB versions dont have one?

Easycom: That is true, the 2GB versions do not feature a webcam.

16-Mar-2008 GU5: Is it possible to load Sat Nav onto this machine with either a usb GPS receiver or a Bluetooth receiver?

Easycom: Yes, it is possible to connect a GPS receiver to this laptop (depending on Linux driver availability). There are open source mapping applications for Linux that can operate as a point-to-point navigation system, but it is best that you look for these before purchasing the laptop to avoid disappointment. Alternatively, you can buy a Windows-based laptop which has lots of support from big-name satellite navigation manufacturers and native support of bluetooth and USB GPS receivers.

21-Mar-2008 Danny: I would use this for mainly Internet when away from home. Is there an internet cleanup programme installed so you can clear the internet cluter that slows things down? If not how can it cope without a facility like Norton to clear the clutter - also what is the virus protection options?

Easycom: The mozilla-based browser that ships with this laptop is ideal for preventing self-installing browser-based 'clutter'.

21-Mar-2008 NormK: Hi, I need a small machine to carry with me and show microsoft power point presentations that are stored on a memory stick. Will this item be able to translate and project power points via the vga? Thanks

Easycom: This machine runs Linux which has no support from Microsoft Office (which includes PowerPoint). The laptop is able to output video to external displays/projectors via the VGA port however, and it is possible to use OpenOffice (a free open-source Office program for Linux/Windows/Mac) to read and display your powerpoint files. This software may not be installed by default so may require an internet connection to enable it to download.

27-Mar-2008 RobL: Hi, can you use an external hard drive with a usb connection?

Easycom: Yes, the EEE PC is compatible with external USB hard-drives.

28-Mar-2008 Mattyboy: Hi, Is it possible to load XP/Vista on to the Asus Eee? The laptop is the perfect size for my needs when travelling but all my documents and files would be Windows

Easycom: I would suggest buying a laptop with a Microsoft Windows based operating system to ensure compatibility with Microsoft Operating system.

29-Mar-2008 nick c: hi, i am interested in using this for school but i wanted to know if windows xp can be installed to it. cheers. nick c.

Easycom: No - The EEE PC uses Linux. I would suggest buying a laptop with a Microsoft Windows based operating system.

30-Mar-2008 Lyn: Hi - I am thinking of buying Asus Eee PC mainly because my work is out & about from the office most of the time. I need regular PC access to update my notes. At work my employer uses Microsoft Word 2000 programme. Is Word installed on the PC and is it compatable with Word 2000? Thank you

Easycom: No - The EEE PC uses Linux which is not supported by any Microsoft Office products. I would suggest buying a laptop with a Microsoft Windows based operating system to ensure compatibility with Microsoft Office.

31-Mar-2008 Jo1983: At the moment I dont have access to wireless internet. Who is the best internet provider to use & would It need to be wired up in my home to beable to use.

Easycom: The EEE PC is compatible with all providers - You should look around for the best offer. The EEE PC has integrated wireless, so if you get a wireless offer from an ISP (or set up your own wireless network with a wireless router) then you will be able to go online without wires.

13-Apr-2008 me: Will i be able to install MS Works 7.0 via a USB EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE! thanks

Easycom: You should be able to, yes.

17-Apr-2008 n.1: because you cant use the dvd/cd on the asus what do you use instead

Easycom: You could use an external optical drive, or transfer via network or USB flash pen.

19-Apr-2008 tracey: hi, can i use my dongle from 3 network on this laptop for access to the internet while out and about

Easycom: Yes, provided it works with the operating system, you would need to confirm that with 3.

24-Apr-2008 jeannette: when are the 2gb version back in stock?

Easycom: Hopefully within the next week.

26-Apr-2008 n.1: doce the Asus Eee PC 2GB Black - EEEPC2GS-BK004 have a pc card

Easycom: No.

11-May-2008 Mike: Hi. Will this allow a USB flashpen to be attached ? Would it allow me to download files from the internet onto the flashpen ? Thanks .

Easycom: Yes, no problem.

15-May-2008 Ally: Will it's wireless set-up be able to access the wi-fi hotspots on a cruise ship. I just need it to browse the net and send emails?

Easycom: Yes, no problem - As long as the wireless network is unlocked or you have the password for it.

16-Jun-2008 TRACY: hi, would it be possible to play online poker on this model?

Easycom: Yes, if it is a browser based game. If it is instead a software application you would have to check that it is compatible with Linux.

Expand/CollapseBuying Advice

7-Feb-2008 PeterE: Hi, I'm thinking of buying one of these (Asus Eee PC2GS). I really wanted the 4GB version but there just aren't any in the country that I can find. If I get this 2GB version with a 4 or 8GB SD card how will it compare on performance. Thanks.

Easycom: It really depends how much storage space you need. We are expecting more of the 4GB Eee's in the near future!
