With it a 17'' monitor, but if I plug it in the monitor doesn't work properly when the laptop screen is open and turns off when I close it. I want to be able to use the laptop without having to open it up.

Easycom: Acer notebooks are designed to run with screens open as it increase the ventataliation available to the notebook. We consequently do not recommend or sell any docking stations which allow screen down operation.
